It is a selective agonist for a vascular 5-HT1 receptor subtype (probably a member of the 5-HT1D family) and was the first triptan approved in 1991 for the acute treatment of migraine headaches. Sumatriptan has the lowest oral bioavailability among all triptans due to its low lipophilicity.
